Tips for tourist drivers in Montenegro
Almost all tourists know or guess about the advantages of having your own car while on vacation. Therefore, the popularity of independent travel in Montenegro is growing every year.
Moreover, in addition to renting a car on the spot, an increasing number of our compatriots travel to this country on vacation by their own transport, not at all afraid of distances. But in order to get to Montenegro, they have to transit through more than one country.
However, there is nothing complicated in such a rally, just as there are no difficulties in traveling on Montenegrin roads themselves. The distances here are short, there are often populated places along the route, and there are not so many roads themselves - if you have a map or navigator, it is almost impossible to get lost.
Traffic on the roads is quite free, traffic jams are mostly small and arise only in large cities during rush hour, other drivers behave European, and even a driver with little experience can drive a car in Montenegro. The only possible difficulty is mountain roads, but there is a good solution to the problem: plan your trips during the day and do not violate the speed limit, then the journey along the mountain serpentine will bring only positive emotions from contemplating the stunning landscapes along the entire route.

Basic traffic rules
Montenegro has adopted the pan-European traffic rules. Therefore, for a Russian driver, signs and markings on the road will be well understood. You just need to pay attention to some important aspects:
It is forbidden to drive a car after drinking alcohol; the permissible blood alcohol level is 0 ppm
When driving a car, dipped headlights must always be turned on.
The driver and all passengers must fasten their seat belts.
At roundabouts, drivers who are already moving on the roundabout have the right of way.
Some traffic lights have an additional section that allows turning right when the main red signal is on.
Permitted speed: in the city - 60 km/h, outside the city - 90 km/h.
Main penalties for traffic violations:
Drinking a vehicle: deprivation of rights with a fine of up to 2,000 euros or several days of detention.
Driving without using dipped headlights: fine of 30 euros.
Using a mobile phone while driving: fine of 20 euros.
Driving with unfastened seat belts by the driver and passengers: fine of 15 euros.
Overtaking after a prohibition sign and crossing the solid line: fine of 50 to 150 euros.
When a police officer in Montenegro stops a driver for violating the rules, he or she takes away the driver's license and registration certificate until the fine is paid, in some cases the offender's passport is also taken away.
To return the documents, you will need to appear in court at the agreed time, get the exact amount of the fine from the judge and pay it together with the court costs through a bank, only after that will the documents be returned to you.
Traffic police usually monitor compliance with the rules in dangerous areas: in cities at intersections, on bridges, on the highway. The police usually do not deal with catching violators on open, well-visible country roads.
Drivers are stopped only for a specific violation or during special operations to catch criminals. In the case of minor violations of the rules, there is a chance that you will receive a warning if you convince the police of your remorse.
