Please note that our fleet includes several vehicles with diesel fuel and AdBlue, and our manager will definitely tell you that when filling up the car, you need to check the level of both liquids.
What is AdBlue?
AdBlue is a solution made up of urea and water that is injected into your car's exhaust system before the nitrogen oxide leaves your exhaust. Once it's injected into the exhaust pipe, it reacts with the NOx produced by the combustion process and breaks it down into harmless nitrogen and oxygen.
This is an example of a simple chemical process - at high temperatures, AdBlue turns into ammonia, and it's this process that breaks down the NOx. And this significantly reduces the amount of nitrogen oxide particles in your exhaust.
This process is controlled by a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. In a nutshell, AdBlue is injected through a catalyst in the exhaust.
When do you need to top up your AdBlue?
Your car will tell you everything. When it's running low - you get a warning on your dashboard, you'll get plenty of notifications before the lack of AdBlue becomes a problem. Basically, it's the same as filling up with regular fuel - the car will let you know in advance that it's running low.
Where can I buy AdBlue?
You can buy AdBlue at any petrol station. It's a simple process, like adding windscreen washer fluid.
The location of the filler cap varies depending on the car. In some, it's next to the fuel filler cap, while others are on the side of the boot or under the boot floor. Again, our Rent a car Adriatic car rental manager will demonstrate how it works when you hand over the car.
What happens if I run out of AdBlue?
Your car's engine management system won't stop the car, but when your AdBlue runs out, it won't be able to start it. We'd advise you to top it up as soon as the warning appears - it'll save you from further hassle.
